Gear

James uses a lovely combination of vintage and modern microphones to produce accurate, “classical”, but flattering recordings with a great sense of realism and depth. He most often uses Decca based recoding techniques, captured through crystal clear preamps and converters.

His microphone list includes offerings from Neumann, AEA, STC Coles and Line Audio amongst others. James has a full height Decca Tree and only uses Van Damme/Neutrik cabling to ensure maximum quality - including in a 50m 32 channel analogue multicore.

James typically uses a 64 channel Pro Tools HDX Dante rig for location recordings. For anything else required for a project, James has great relationships with hire shops to ensure streamlined access to anything needed.

James has worked with world class conductors including Michael Rose MBE, and ex-Jette Parker Royal Opera House artists Thomas Payne and Eleanor Burke. He has also recorded exceptional soloists including English National Opera’s Nadine Benjamin MBE, the leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Stephen Bryant, BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Award winner, Fenella Humphreys, and the Phantom of the Opera’s Fiona Finsbury, amongst others.
